The Chhattisgarh State Rural Livelihood Mission (Bihan) is emerging as a powerful tool for transforming rural lives by empowering women and strengthening local economies. Implemented under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission, the initiative is helping women achieve financial independence through sustainable livelihood opportunities.
One such inspiring story comes from Dadgaon village in Udaipur block, where Sakina, a member of the ‘Sai Baba Group’, has transformed her life through the program. Once hesitant to even visit a bank, she now runs a successful enterprise through her self-help group and has become a role model for other women in her community.
A key factor in her success has been the support received through convergence of government schemes. Under the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) initiative, Sakina’s group was provided with a cement mixer machine, enabling them to take up construction-related work in rural areas.
To expand her livelihood, Sakina took a loan of ₹60,000 from her group. Today, the mixer machine and shuttering materials have become a steady source of income. With increasing demand for construction work under housing schemes like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, the group is earning approximately ₹6,000 to ₹7,000 per day after expenses.
Sakina credits the Bihan initiative for her transformation. She says that earlier she lacked confidence and avoided financial institutions, but now she actively manages her work and encourages other women to become self-reliant.
Her improved financial condition has also positively impacted her family. Her daughter is now pursuing college education, while her son is studying in high school. With stable income, the family is able to support education without financial stress.
Expressing gratitude, Sakina acknowledged the role of government initiatives and leadership, including Narendra Modi and Vishnu Deo Sai, in empowering rural women and providing them with dignity and opportunities.
Officials say the mission aims to help women achieve annual incomes exceeding ₹1 lakh, reinforcing the vision of a self-reliant rural economy driven by women-led initiatives.
