Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Chhattisgarh’s efforts in conserving blackbucks during the latest episode of Mann Ki Baat, drawing appreciation from Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, who termed the recognition a moment of pride for the state.
Addressing a gathering in Raipur while listening to the 133rd episode of the programme, the Chief Minister said that repeated mention of Chhattisgarh’s achievements at a national platform strengthens the state’s identity and boosts public morale. He described the programme as a powerful medium that connects citizens and highlights grassroots innovations and success stories from across the country.
Sai noted that the Prime Minister, through such interactions, inspires people and encourages collective participation in nation-building. He added that the recognition of blackbuck conservation efforts reflects the state’s strong commitment to environmental protection and biodiversity.
The spotlight is on Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary in Baloda Bazar-Bhatapara district, which has emerged as a major conservation success. Spread over nearly 245 square kilometres, the sanctuary now provides a safe habitat for around 200 blackbucks, a species that had nearly disappeared from the region decades ago.
Officials said the revival has been the result of sustained efforts, scientific management, and continuous monitoring. The species had almost vanished after the 1970s due to habitat loss and encroachment. A restoration plan approved in 2018 marked the beginning of a structured reintroduction programme.
Despite initial challenges, including disease-related deaths, authorities improved habitat conditions by enhancing drainage systems, strengthening enclosures, and appointing dedicated veterinary support. These measures helped stabilise and gradually increase the population.
Today, the presence of blackbucks in the sanctuary’s grasslands is seen as a symbol of ecological restoration. Experts believe the growing population indicates successful adaptation and may pave the way for their eventual release into the wild.
The Chief Minister also highlighted other initiatives, including the economic benefits of bamboo policy reforms and efforts toward renewable energy development in the state.
During the event, Sai also shared traditional local cuisine with attendees, calling it a gesture that strengthens social bonding and community spirit.
