Indian Railways has introduced a new boarding station rule from 2026 aimed at improving passenger convenience and flexibility. The change comes under the Rail Ministry’s “52 Weeks, 52 Reforms” initiative, which focuses on enhancing service quality, operational efficiency, and overall travel experience for passengers.

Under the revised rule, passengers will now be allowed to change their boarding station up to 30 minutes before the train departs from its original starting point. The move is expected to benefit travelers in major cities where multiple railway stations operate, giving them more flexibility in planning their journey.

Earlier, passengers could only change their boarding point before the preparation of the reservation chart. With the new digital system in place, last-minute changes have become possible through online platforms, making the process more user-friendly and efficient. For instance, if a passenger initially planned to board from Station A but later finds it more convenient to board from Station B, the change can now be made easily within the allowed time frame.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the provision on March 24, 2026, stating that passengers who miss boarding from their original station will be allowed to start their journey from the next convenient station without losing their confirmed seat, provided they update their boarding point within the stipulated time.

Who Can Use This Facility?

The facility will be available only to passengers holding confirmed or RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) tickets. Additionally, the boarding station can be changed only once, and the request must be submitted before the second reservation chart is prepared.

How to Change Boarding Station Online

Passengers who booked tickets online can log in to the IRCTC website or mobile app, go to the “My Transactions” section, select the booked ticket, and choose the “Change Boarding Point” option. After selecting the preferred station and confirming the request, a confirmation message will be sent to the registered mobile number.

Process for Counter Ticket Holders

Passengers who purchased tickets through railway reservation counters will need to visit the nearest Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter and submit a request to change their boarding station.

The new rule is expected to reduce last-minute travel stress and provide greater flexibility to passengers, especially in metropolitan regions with multiple railway stations.
