In a major development in the high-profile Ram Avtar Jaggi murder case, the Chhattisgarh High Court has dealt a significant setback to Amit Jogi by directing him to surrender within three weeks. The order was issued after a crucial hearing in which the division bench led by the Chief Justice heard arguments from all parties involved.
The case dates back to June 4, 2003, when NCP leader Ram Avtar Jaggi was shot dead, triggering widespread outrage across Chhattisgarh. The incident was considered one of the most sensational political murders in the state at the time.
In 2007, a Raipur special court convicted 28 accused and sentenced them to life imprisonment, while Amit Jogi was acquitted due to lack of evidence. A total of 31 individuals were named in the case, with two of them turning government witnesses. Jaggi’s son, Satish Jaggi, later challenged Amit Jogi’s acquittal in the Supreme Court, which initially granted a stay in his favor. The apex court subsequently transferred the matter to the High Court for further consideration.
Who Was Ram Avtar Jaggi?
Ram Avtar Jaggi came from a business background and was known to be a close associate of former Union Minister Vidya Charan Shukla. When Shukla joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) after leaving the Congress, Jaggi also moved with him and was appointed as the party’s treasurer in Chhattisgarh.
Convicted Accused
Several individuals were convicted in the Jaggi murder case, including Abhay Goyal, Yahya Dhebar, V.K. Pandey, Firoz Siddiqui, Rakesh Chandra Trivedi, Avneesh Singh Lallan, Suryakant Tiwari, Amrik Singh Gill, Chiman Singh, Sunil Gupta, Raju Bhadauria, Anil Pachauri, Ravindra Singh, Ravi Singh, Lalla Bhadauria, Dharmendra, Satyendra Singh, Shivendra Singh Parihar, Vinod Singh Rathore, Sanjay Singh Kushwaha, Rakesh Kumar Sharma, Vikram Sharma (deceased), Jabwant, and Vishwanath Rajbhar, among others.
The High Court’s latest directive for Amit Jogi to surrender marks a crucial turning point in the long-running legal battle, and further proceedings in the case are expected in the coming weeks.
