New Delhi, August 23 — External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Saturday said that US President Donald Trump’s way of handling foreign policy is unique, as he often makes major announcements publicly before speaking to the countries involved.
Speaking at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum 2025, Jaishankar remarked, “We’ve never had a US President who conducts both foreign and domestic matters so openly. President Trump’s approach is a clear break from the traditional style of diplomacy.”
Key Observations by Jaishankar
Unconventional Diplomacy
Trump uses tariffs not just for trade but also for wider strategic goals. Many times, his administration’s first move is made public, and only later communicated officially to other nations.India–US Trade Talks
Negotiations are ongoing, but India has drawn “red lines” to protect farmers and small businesses from unfavorable deals.Russian Oil Imports
Jaishankar defended India’s decision to buy Russian oil, pointing out that similar criticism is not directed at China or the EU. He recalled that discussions with the US led to the current price cap mechanism. No Mediation on Pakistan
Reaffirming India’s stance, Jaishankar made it clear that New Delhi does not accept any external mediation in its relations with Pakistan.
Global Impact
The minister concluded that the world is still adjusting to Trump’s public-first diplomacy, which marks a major shift in global politics and international relations.
