Bastar is on the brink of a major transformation as the upcoming Raipur–Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor (NH-130 CD) promises to significantly improve connectivity and unlock new economic opportunities. Being developed under the Bharatmala Project, this six-lane greenfield corridor is expected to reduce travel time, enhance trade access, and connect the landlocked region directly to international ports.
Faster, Smoother Travel
At present, travel from Jagdalpur to Visakhapatnam takes 7–9 hours through the hilly terrains of Koraput and Jeypore in Odisha. The new corridor will cut this journey down to just 3.5–4 hours, offering a direct, gradient-free route. This will not only save time but also reduce fuel consumption and vehicle maintenance costs, especially for heavy transport.
Strategic Link via Nabarangpur
The corridor passes through key districts of Chhattisgarh, including Raipur, Dhamtari, Kanker, and Kondagaon. For Bastar, the Daspur interchange at Nabarangpur in Odisha will serve as a crucial access point. Jagdalpur will connect to the corridor within 50–60 km, enabling seamless movement toward Visakhapatnam Port and global trade routes.
Boost to Local Economy
The improved logistics network is expected to benefit Bastar’s unique products such as Arabica coffee, organic tamarind, mahua-based goods, and traditional Dhokra handicrafts. Lower transportation costs will make these products more competitive in international markets, ensuring better returns for farmers, forest produce collectors, and artisans.
Employment and Regional Growth
The project is likely to accelerate development in aspirational districts like Bastar, Kanker, and Kondagaon. Improved road infrastructure will enhance access to education, healthcare, and other essential services. It is also expected to generate employment in sectors such as logistics, construction, real estate, and services, creating new opportunities for local youth.
Industrial and Mining Advantage
Rich in iron ore and other minerals, the Bastar region will benefit from faster transportation to Visakhapatnam Port, boosting exports and industrial activity. The corridor is also expected to attract new industrial clusters along its route, encouraging manufacturing and investment.
Tourism and Cultural Exposure
Better connectivity will make Bastar’s renowned attractions—such as Bastar Dussehra, Danteshwari Temple, Kutumsar Caves, and the Chitrakote and Tirathgarh waterfalls—more accessible to domestic and international tourists. This is likely to enhance tourism revenue and promote the region’s rich cultural heritage on a global stage.
Engineering with Environmental Care
A key highlight of the project is Chhattisgarh’s first twin-tube tunnel, approximately 2.79 km long, being constructed through the Keshkal hills in Kanker district. Passing through an eco-sensitive zone near the Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve, the design incorporates wildlife-friendly features like animal underpasses, overpasses, and canopy bridges to maintain ecological balance.
A Transformational Project
Spanning around 464 km and estimated at a cost of ₹16,491 crore, the Raipur–Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor is poised to redefine the economic landscape of Bastar and the entire state. By linking tribal and remote regions with major industrial and port hubs, the project aims to integrate them into the mainstream economy.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai stated that the corridor will open new avenues for development and ensure direct market access for local products. Deputy Chief Minister and PWD Minister Arun Sao emphasized that the project will strengthen connectivity, improve transport efficiency, and create new avenues for trade and employment.
Overall, the corridor is being seen as a game-changer that will pave the way for Bastar’s economic growth, global integration, and long-term development.
