After years of sustained public demand and persistent efforts, Bilasa Airport at Chakarbhatha has finally received approval for night landing operations under the 3C IFR category. With this clearance, aircraft with 72- and 80-seat capacity can now operate round the clock, significantly improving air connectivity in the region.
The new license will allow uninterrupted flight operations even during adverse weather conditions, reducing the risk of cancellations that previously affected services. Officials believe the development will play a key role in strengthening industrial activity and accelerating the state’s economic growth.
The struggle to secure full operational status for the airport has been led by the Hawai Suvidha Jan Sangharsh Samiti along with local residents, who have been raising their voice for uninterrupted air services from Bilaspur for nearly six years. Although the airport became operational in March 2021, flight services remained limited due to the absence of night landing facilities.
With the latest approval, the long-standing demand for night operations has now been partially fulfilled. Earlier, flight activity would come to a halt after evening hours, leaving the airport inactive at night. Expansion work is already underway to further upgrade facilities, officials said.
Demand for 4C Airport and Metro Connectivity Continues
Despite welcoming the decision, the civic group stated that their demands have only been half met. They continue to push for direct flights to all major metropolitan cities and the upgrade of Bilaspur Airport to 4C category, allowing larger aircraft to operate. The committee has made it clear that the movement will continue until all demands are fulfilled.
Minister Calls It a Major Boost for Chhattisgarh
Union Minister of State Tokhan Sahu, who played a significant role in securing the clearance, described the approval as a historic milestone for Chhattisgarh. He said the upgrade would ensure aircraft operations in all weather conditions and greatly enhance regional air connectivity.
The minister expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, stating that the achievement reflects the impact of the Centre–State “double-engine government.” He also highlighted the coordinated efforts among various central departments, including the Defence Ministry, for land transfer related to the airport’s expansion.
According to officials, the airport’s upgradation will open new opportunities for trade, industry, investment, and tourism, benefiting not just Bilaspur but the entire division and the state at large.
