Security forces have launched a large-scale search and combing operation in the Chinnagelur forest region of southern Bijapur district following intelligence inputs about the presence of armed Maoists in the area.
Based on the specific information received, joint teams comprising various security forces were deployed to conduct the operation in the southern Bijapur region. According to officials, intermittent exchange of fire between the security forces and Maoist cadres has been ongoing since around 7:30 am on Friday.
During the encounter, the body of one Maoist along with a sophisticated AK-47 rifle has been recovered from the site. Sources have indicated that the deceased Maoist has been identified as Udham Singh, a senior Maoist commander and member of the Divisional Committee (DVC).
The encounter reportedly took place within the jurisdiction of Tarrem police station. Confirming the development, the Superintendent of Police stated that the operation is still underway and intensive search activities are being carried out in the surrounding forest areas.
He further added that detailed information regarding the encounter will be shared after the conclusion of the operation. At present, security personnel remain on high alert and continue to hold their positions to prevent any possible movement or retaliation by Maoist groups.
