In a major update on teacher recruitment, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai has directed the state government to fill 5,000 vacant teaching positions immediately. Officials have been instructed to ensure that the recruitment advertisement is released by February and that the entire process is completed in a time-bound manner.
The Chief Minister also clarified that the waiting list from Teacher Recruitment-2023 will not be extended, so that candidates who have already qualified get a chance to join government service without further delay.
Recruitment Advertisement to Be Released in February
State Education Minister confirmed that the government is fully committed to addressing the long-awaited recruitment. He stated that the advertisement for the teacher recruitment exam will be issued next month, and the recruitment process will be completed by June, ensuring appointments are made before the start of the upcoming academic session.
Background: Previous Recruitment and Current Situation
This is the first major teacher recruitment in three years. The previous government had announced 14,000 teaching positions, but only 10,000 appointments were made. The new recruitment drive is expected to provide employment opportunities to thousands of candidates.
Currently, Chhattisgarh has 30,700 primary schools with an average of 21.84 students per teacher, while 13,149 upper primary schools have a student-teacher ratio of 26.2, which is better than the national average. Despite this, 212 primary schools have no teachers, and 6,872 schools have only one teacher. At the upper primary level, 48 schools have no teachers, and 255 schools have only one teacher.
In urban areas, the student-teacher ratio varies widely:
527 schools: 10 or fewer students per teacher
1,106 schools: 11–20 students per teacher
837 schools: 21–30 students per teacher
245 schools: 40 or more students per teacher
Some schools have teachers present, but the student numbers are minimal, highlighting imbalances in staffing and resource allocation.
CM Emphasizes Education as a Top Priority
Chief Minister Sai reiterated that strengthening the state’s education system is the government’s top priority, and all necessary steps are being taken to achieve this goal. He emphasized that the upcoming recruitment drive will not only address teacher shortages but also enhance the overall quality of education in the state.
