The Chhattisgarh government has made the registration of all marriages compulsory across the state. An official notification to this effect has been published in the state gazette by the Law and Legislative Affairs Department.
According to the notification, the rule will apply to all couples whose marriages were solemnised on or after January 29, 2016. The decision has been taken by exercising powers under the Chhattisgarh Anand Marriage Registration Rules, 2016.
Authorized Officers to Handle Registration
The gazette notification clarifies that marriage registration will be carried out by officials who are already authorised under the Chhattisgarh Compulsory Marriage Registration Rules, 2006. This ensures continuity in the registration process without the need for new administrative arrangements.
Aim to Curb Social Evils
The government stated that mandatory registration will help curb social practices such as child marriage and reduce instances of fraudulent or illegal marriages. Proper documentation is expected to bring greater transparency and legal clarity.
Legal Safeguards for Women
One of the major benefits of compulsory registration is enhanced legal protection for women. An official marriage certificate strengthens women’s rights in matters related to inheritance, maintenance, property disputes, and marital litigation. It also helps avoid complications in future legal proceedings.
Importance for Official Documentation
A registered marriage certificate will also be useful for accessing government welfare schemes and for obtaining important documents such as passports and visas.
Citizens Urged to Comply
The notification clearly states that marriages must be registered within the prescribed procedure and time limit. Citizens have been advised to approach the designated offices at the earliest to complete the registration process and avoid any legal inconvenience in the future.
